History of Kajukenbo

Building Stronger Families Through Martial Arts – Confidence, Discipline, and Fun for All Age

History of Kajukenbo

Kajukenbo is a unique and powerful martial art born out of necessity, innovation, and collaboration. Its origins trace back to post-World War II Hawaii, a time when street violence and gang activity were on the rise. In response to this growing threat, five martial artists from different disciplines came together with a shared goal: to create a system that was effective in real-world self-defense.

These pioneers—Adriano Emperado (Kenpo), Peter Choo (Karate), Frank Ordonez (Judo), George Chang (Jujitsu), and Joe Holck (Boxing)—combined their expertise to form a hybrid style that would later be known as Kajukenbo:

  • KA – Karate (Tang Soo Do): for powerful strikes and traditional forms
  • JU – Judo and Jujitsu: for throws, locks, and grappling techniques
  • KEN – Kenpo: for fluid, rapid-fire combinations and streetwise tactics
  • BO – Boxing: for footwork, timing, and striking precision

The founders trained together rigorously in the Palama Settlement of Honolulu, testing and refining techniques through full-contact sparring and real-life scenarios. Their goal was not elegance or tradition—it was survivability. Kajukenbo was forged in the streets, designed to be adaptable, aggressive, and brutally effective.

Over time, Kajukenbo evolved into several branches, each reflecting the personality and focus of its practitioners. Despite these variations, the core philosophy remains the same: use what works. Kajukenbo practitioners are encouraged to be open-minded, incorporating techniques from other arts while maintaining the system’s foundational principles.

Today, Kajukenbo is practiced worldwide and continues to grow. It is respected for its practicality, versatility, and emphasis on personal development. At Embrun Karate, we honor this legacy by teaching Kajukenbo not only as a method of self-defense but as a path to discipline, confidence, and lifelong learning.
